Who we are

Initiatives for Peace and Human Rights (iPeace) is a non profit organization that has been working since 2001 to help communities and individuals in Africa’s Great Lakes Region achieve sustainable peaceful coexistence using human rights and good governance education.
iPeace has independently registered organizations in Burundi, DR Congo and Rwanda, which closely collaborate to achieve their shared mission. In the Netherlands, Stichting Initiatives for Peace and Human Rights (SIPHR) is set to raise financial support for the organization’s activities in Africa.

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT

iPeace organizes several capacity-building sessions for the members of our target communities in order to empower them with necessary knowledge and skills to be able to claim their rights as well as to respect and protect those of the others.

LEGAL AID FOR EQUAL ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR ALL

At iPeace we believe that providing free legal advice and access to justice to vulnerable people are critical to the protection of human rights and the preservation of human welfare.

ADVOCACY FOR BETTER DECISION AND POLICIES

Peace implements advocacy campaigns to raise awareness of law-makers and policy-makers about major challenges that members of vulnerable groups face and which hinder their full enjoyment of their rights

RESEARCH FOR EVIDENCE-BASED CONCLUSIONS

iPeace conducts research to understand specific issues threatening the peaceful enjoyment of human rights and undermining  the observation of good governance principles.

Our Programmes

Our interventions are closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (especially goal 16) and the priorities of the respective countries we work in. In a comprehensive way, our activities are grouped around the following thematic areas.

Access to justice for vulnerable people

Rights are not worth it if they are not exercised. Certain categories of people face challenges to enjoy their rights. That is why iPeace has been working hard with leaders and communities to ensure that vulnerable people have access to justice like any other citizens.

Human Rights Education

To sustainably stop human rights violations, people must be fully aware and understand their rights as enshrined in different laws and regulations.

Enhancement of good governance

Good Governance is key to a stable community. Among other things, Good Governance implies that local authorities are transparent and that they promote people’s participation in the decision-making process.

Peace Building and Reconciliation

Sustainable peace is the final goal pursued by iPeace As an organization working in post-conflict regions, iPeace has programs that aim to reinforce peaceful cohabitation among peoples

Digital Transformation and Human Rights

Technology is quickly transforming the society. Digital transformation is considered as the royal way to fast track economic development in developing countries. For that reason, heavy investments are done in digital solutions to bring critical services to the most vulnerable, to create jobs, to strengthen small and medium businesses, to enable trade and services, and to build resilience.

Refugees, Asylum-Seekers and Migrants

People may seek to rebuild their lives in a foreign country for multiple reasons. While some may choose to leave their countries for a better job or education, others can be forced to escape from persecution or human rights abuses.

Gender Equality, Economic inclusion and Wowen Empowement

iPeace applies a transformative approach to gender norms in all its programs and activities. The goal is to change social and gender norms to fight against unequal power and privileges between people of different sexes in order to free people and communities from harmful and destructive norms.
